3 Subscription Gifts for the Outdoor Adventurer & Road Tripper in Your Life
If you’re searching for a holiday gift for a minimalist, an “experience-seeker”, a hiker, a road trip lover, and/or an outdoor enthusiast - stop looking! We’ve put together our favorite app subscriptions in this list; these creative gifts are clutter-free and easy to ship with the push of a button.
This app (formerly known as HearHere) is an ideal road trip companion! If you’ve ever driven past a roadside memorial, a small town park, or an oddity in the landscape and wondered “I wonder what the story is there?,” this app will answer your questions. Autio can play you short 1-4 minute stories about the places you’re driving through. You’ll learn about famous residents, natural disasters, city histories, place name origins, kidnappings, massacres, legends, and more.
The app integrates into Apple CarPlay, making it seamless to transition between these knowledge nuggets and whatever else you may be listening to on your drive. Some stories are narrated by co-founder Kevin Costner or other celebrity narrators.
We’ve really enjoyed listening and learning about Minnesota and Wisconsin on our many road trips near to home with Bert and Ernie, and because the app is always on my phone, I have it available when we travel to places without the dogs too!
An annual subscription will set you back $35.99 and grants you access to over 9,000 audio stories for locations all around the country. For 20% off, click here (affiliate link).
A must have for anyone looking to spend time on trails! AllTrails has a remarkable searchable database of trail guides and maps not just around the United States, but all around the globe. AllTrails Pro is an amazing gift for your favorite hiker at $35.99 annually or $2.99 per month.
We’ve used AllTrails to plan hiking trips to national parks like Grand Canyon, to find hidden gems like Frog Bay Tribal National Park, and to build dream itineraries for trips we hope to take in the future. The downloadable map feature that comes with AllTrails Pro is clutch when you know you’ll be spending time in a place with little or no cell service. The GPS navigation and off-route notifications saved us from getting lost on a pre-sunrise hike to Delicate Arch at Arches National Park!
Ratings and reviews from fellow hikers make AllTrails a really valuable resource for doing pre-hike research. We look for notes about dog friendliness, trail conditions, bugs (especially in summer), and parking tips.
An Audible Premium Plus subscription is a great clutter-free gift for anyone you know who is always on the go. Since we spend a lot of time in the car, we like to listen to audiobooks and podcasts through Audible. There are two Audible subscription options - Audible Plus ($7.95/month) and Audible Premium Plus ($14.95/month). With Plus, you can listen to any audiobook or podcast in the Audible Plus catalog. Premium Plus gets you one credit per month for an audiobook of your choice in addition to access to the Audible Plus catalog. We like Premium Plus for the flexibility to choose whatever book we like each month!
Here are some of our favorite listens on long drives (affiliate link)
Bill Bryson - A Walk in the Woods; In A Sunburned Country
Mark Twain - The Innocents Abroad; Roughing It
Peter Allison - Whatever You Do, Don’t Run
Nick Offerman - Where the Deer and the Antelope Play
Candice Millard - River of the Gods; River of Doubt
Hope these easy gift suggestions are helpful as you look for the perfect gift for the adventurer in your life!
